SEASON OPENS NOVEMBER 2023

California’s big wave surfing competition is making a comeback.

For most of the year this break is silent: an underwater canyon tucked into the California coastline. But, when conditions are right, the waves rise and call the most daring individuals to ride them— earning the attention of millions around the globe.

One winter storm is all it takes.

Nestled between San Francisco and Silicon Valley is the coastal town of Half Moon Bay. Just off the shore of this town is Mavericks, one of only a handful of big wave breaks around the world.

Only 30 minutes from downtown San Francisco, Half Moon Bay has an extensive history as a quintessential Californian town. Today, in addition to its absorption of surfing culture, it has a thriving visual arts, music and dining scene.

Our vision

  • World class competition

    Mavericks attracts the world’s best big wave surfers whenever it breaks. Watch these brave men and women, to be selected unanimously by a panel of big wave experts, compete head to head and against nature itself.

  • Elite Safety Team

    To ensure all the athletes’ safety during the contest, a world-class safety crew will be put in place and led by Frank Quirarte, who has been managing safety at Mavericks for decades. All other safety measures will be taken care of by the experienced production team.

  • Livestreaming

    The Mavericks Big Wave Invitational will be broadcast via a state-of-the-art, eight hour livestream. This view will provide premier coverage of the event and its athletes in competition, along with displaying pre-produced content between the action.

  • Equality

    Truly leveling the playing field for men and women, the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational will have an equal number of male and female competitors, equal prize money between gendered divisions, and equal opportunity to compete on the waves — A first for a surf event of this magnitude.

  • Community

    Mavericks is part of the fabric of the Half Moon Bay community. We seek to bring this event back after six years of absence to showcase the beauty and power of the break while bringing fans to the many local businesses that surround us.

  • Conservation

    Protecting the coastline is key to our vision, and we will partner with local establishments to host livestream watch parties and minimize the footprint along the cliffs.
